State sues over ownership of Yadkin River

The state Department of Administration filed a lawsuit Friday over the title to the riverbed of the Yadkin River. Alcoa, which has operated hydroelectric dams on the river for decades, has laid claim to the riverbed, and state officials say they want the courts to settle the matter.

Riverkeeper threatens suit over Thomasville spills

The Southern Environmental Law Center, acting on behalf of the Yadkin Riverkeeper, sent a notice to city leaders Friday for alleged violations of the federal Clean Water Act by discharging untreated sewage into the waterways in the Yadkin River Basin.

US Army Corps of Engineers revokes NCDOT's permit for the Monroe Bypass

On April 26, 2013 the US Army Corps of Engineers revoked NCDOT's permit for the Monroe Bypass. The permit is required under section 404 of the Clean Water Act and the Bypass cannot be constructed without it. The Yadkin Riverkeeper along with Clean Air Carolina and the NC Wildlife Federation have been urging the Corps to revoke the permit since the ruling by the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit last May which invalidated the environmental study performed by NCDOT.
