Fracking

Yadkin Riverkeeper is a partner with the Frack Free NC alliance. “Frack-Free NC” is a network of grassroots organizations who believe that shale gas development using “fracking” cannot be done without bringing harm to our waters, land, air and communities. We are advocating to keep North Carolina frack free.

The moratorium on fracking in NC was lifted in June, 2014. The Mining and Energy Commission (MEC) then held a series of public forums seeking input on rules for fracking. Members of Frack Free NC delivered 59,000 signatures to the Governor's office in opposition to fracking on Oct. 14, 2014, which we feel is a goundswell of public opinion that can be built upon.  We need you to join in the fight to protect North Carolina's groundwater from this destructive industrial process.

quick facts about fracking in North Carolina:

  • In the Yadkin basin, shales being examined for fracking are in Montgomery, Richmond and Anson Counties.

  • The Southern Environmental Law Center has challenged the constitutionality of the panel writing fracking regulation under NC law.

  • Fracking requires hundreds of thousands of gallons per well.  That water ends up filled with chemicals and heavy metals.
